Dysphasia Management
Dysphasia Management
Dysphagia is the medical term for difficulty in swallowing. The role of a nurse is to assess and identify risks that may result in complications from Dysphasia such as aspiration, choking, malnutrition and dehydration. Stroke, Parkinson’s disease, multiple sclerosis, head injury, and cerebral palsy are a few medical conditions that may cause dysphasia. Our nurses will assess for decreased level of consciousness, cognitive deficits, inability to sit upright, facial weakness or drooping, shortness of breath, slurred speech, weak or wet cough, hoarseness, a wet or gurgling sounding voice, and drooling. Our nurses work closely with Speech pathologists to monitor our clients and enable them to manage their condition and improve their quality of life.
